In UAE, the popular mobile messaging app known as WhatsApp has started offering free VoIP calls earlier this week. However, according to the Emirates 24/7 reports it is found that the UAE telecom provider Etisalat has blocked the VoIP calls done using WhatsApp after a few hours when it became available for the UAE people. According to the newspaper sources, the services was blocked by Etisalat because the VoIP services can only be offered in UAE by the licensed providers.
The Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) has issued a statement in which it is clarifying the policy regarding the use of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) in UAE in the response to the news published in this regard. TRA officials said that the VoIP services are still a perquisite of the licensed providers who have the proper right to provide these services through their networks legally. All the companies who are wishing to provide such services must coordinate with the legal licensed telecom providers in the UAE.
In regard to the newspaper source, who belongs from Etisalat and has chosen to remain anonymous, told that the “scrambling has been activated but it might take a few days’ time to percolate down to all UAE subscribers.†According to the newspaper, some people had already managed to use WhatsApp VoIP calls functionality as it is still working over Wi-Fi. It is also found in the newspaper that the subscribers who have managed to download WhatsApp VoIP calls functionality had no sort of service disruption till now. However, the UAE subscribers on the Etisalat platform may be able to use this functionality for a few days more as and when the telecom operator decides to disable the service.
There are vast majorities of WhatsApp users who are still not aware of this exciting new feature as WhatsApp officials has still not made any official announcement or confirmation regarding this functionality in WhatsApp. However, according to the online media, the users need to have the latest version of WhatsApp and also need to know whether their other user have the same version to request a VoIP call from that user.
